September 21 Message from Superintendent Hill

Good afternoon.  Last night, our board of education met to re-evaluate the temporary requirement for all students and employees to wear a face covering during school hours.  As a reminder, the board implemented the measure due to our requirement to follow the Ohio Department of Health quarantine flow chart followed by the Medina County Health Department.  The flow chart allows for students who are considered a close contact to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 to stay in school, rather than quarantine, if a student is fully vaccinated or was wearing a face covering during the period of exposure.  Last night, a review of our current COVID-19 data showed that our students in quarantine due to school-related exposure reduced from three hundred sixty-one (361) to eight (8) during the last three (3) weeks.

As a result, the board of education decided to transition to the following plan, starting tomorrow, September 22:

  • The mandatory face covering requirement for all students and employees will no longer be in effect (except on school transportation, where the CDC Order remains in place);

  • If a school building exceeds the threshold listed below for students who are in isolation (tested positive for COVID-19) and quarantined due to school-related exposure, a two (2)-week requirement for those who are in the building to wear a face covering during school hours will be implemented.  If at the end of the two (2)-week period of time, the threshold is still exceeded, the face covering requirement will be extended another two (2) weeks.  If the threshold continues to be exceeded after the second two (2)-week period, the board of education will meet to discuss the situation.

Grade Levels: Threshold Level:

Pre-K-6th 20% of the student enrollment in the building

7th-12th 15% of the student enrollment in the building;

  • While face coverings will be optional, unless the building threshold listed above is exceeded, we encourage all students to strongly consider wearing a face covering during the school day as those who are unvaccinated and wear a face covering greatly reduce their chance of being placed into quarantine for school-related exposure, per the flow chart referenced above; and

  • Visitors and volunteers will be permitted in school buildings if their purpose is to assist in the direct education of our students.
